Anaamika - The Nameless One
Solitary Weekend
This past weekend was the very 1st weekend i've spent in Tauranga - all by myself! And I had a lovely time. That's not to say I didn't miss him, but I liked getting up, playing some music, doing things at my own pace, going out into town and shopping, taking forever in the cosmetics section, wandering from one videostore to the next in search of the final season of Sex and the City (which i never found....damn u, Tauranga video stores!) having some girly time with dee, playing with the kids, making gulab jamuns while watching tv...it was kind of cool!
It's funny really, coz I could have done all those things, had he been here, it's not like he'd have stopped me but I think the difference is that we get to spend so little time together, that when he's here, I don't want to do any of those other things, I just want to be with him, chatting, going out together, watching a movie that we both like...stuff like that. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to spend 2 hours with Naseem, getting my eyebrows done!!
It was a different weekend and I enjoyed it all the same. Next weekend, we'll be in palmy for grad! I'm so excited, I can barely sit still!
Substitute People
I was watching Elizabethtown (*drroool* Orlando Bloom) over the weekend and Kirsten Dunst's character brings up a very interesting theory about substitute people. Could it really be that some of us are only meant to be substitute people? I've sometimes wondered, though I never really coined that term...
The concept of substitute people goes like this: it's a belief that some people are only meant to be fillers in relationships and not take the lead role. On one level, that could mean that some of us only want to be mistresses and never wives. On another level, it could mean that we can't handle being Numero Uno and therefore pick guys who are already married - to their work for instance and therefore, are not dependant on us. That, I think, is the bit that I relate to - I'd hate to be someone's pivotal point. I broke off a previous relationship because he seemed to think that I was the glue that held his life together. And that, I could not live with! After much deliberation, I've come to the conclusion that it's because I don't accord relationships enough importance to place them in the top spot. They're important, sure. But not important enough to be the glue. I can live without them. It'll be difficult, but I'll survive.
When I was younger, I used to tell people that I'd like to marry a top knotch surgeon, or a pilot - somebody who wasn't home a lot. And that was the real reason. I instinctively want to be in a relationship with someone who has a life outside of the relationship, so thatI get my space.
I never managed to find that person, but after more deliberation, I've decided that that's probably a good thing. I also don't have enough staying power to make a relationship like that last and I would have most definitely lost interest.
So I guess it's good that I've got the security of normalcy and all the space and independance I need.
Hello, and welcome to my very own little cyber-space. This blogspot is going to be a virtual diary, filled with thoughts, anecdotes or sayings that I might have read from someplace as innocuous as on the backseat of an SBS bus, interesting encounters, experiences, travelogues, I think you get the general idea? This space is MY space and will be filled with anything I'd like to fill it with!
So if you think you can handle the nuggets of wisdom embedded in a lot of drivel, please proceed!!

You are Gloria Steinem. You are the McDonalds(tm)
of liberal feminism, though you used to expouse
some pretty radical ideas, you ended up working
the system. Because it's easier? Maybe. But
thanks for the only mainstream feminist
magazine and for heading one of the most
significant feminist lobbys in the history of
the US. We wouldn't be where we are without NOW
and Ms., as much as some of us are loathe to
admit it.

You're Most Like Carrie! You are a balance between
all your friends, incorporating both cynicism
and optimism into the group. You're uniqe, and
never want to betray that about yourself. You
will never stop looking for answers, but you
don't let that get in the way of living life.
You know when to reserved, and when to be
daring. Most of all, you're fun and
charasmatic!
